Intermedia installation utilizing sound, sculpture, prank, and anti-appropriation

This was a multi-layered piece exploring the effect of authority on the viewer's perspective. The installation was the ostensible focus, but our real interest was in the perception of the artwork based on its purported origins and sponsors. Our names were never associated with the work, and we cast ourselves as assistants to the real artists. Through the use of prank and anti-appropriation, the work attempted to draw attention to how authority can be used to create value. In the installation itself, we used low lighting and the subtle smells of jute and grass to evoke a meditative space. The paper synthesizer, which hung inside the structures, was made from pager motors, which were glued to lengths of heavy watercolor paper. By altering the lengths of the paper, we were able to affect the tonality of each motor. The sequence of tones was determined by a PIC microcontroller.
